Poem by my best friend

March 8, 2009 by Vikram Hazra 18 Comments

My best friend, Sajid Insaf, lives in Kent with his wife Farida and son Aarish. After serving an illustrious short service commission in the Indian Army, he has set up an IT business in the UK. Sajid is one of the most upright, steadfast, sincere, compassionate and fun-loving human beings on this planet, and though we now meet after gaps of several years, we are always connected. This is a poem that he wrote and sent me as a response to my post on corruption; I thought you all wd love to see it here rather than dig for it in the comments section 🙂
Live It Well
————
I watched the sun appear this morning
Behind the distant trees,
A busy bee passed by my face
Pushed along by an excited breeze
The flowers were swaying,
The birds were saying;
It is a new morning’s dawn
The fresh dew drops were praying
There was peace all around,
Yet a question needed an answer
It eluded my mind
Like a mischievous dancer
Why then, I thought
Do we care so much
Life is so simple
When you think of it as such
We strive endlessly
Never finding the shore
All we need to do is smile
And then smile a little more
There is only one life
And we must live it well
There is really nothing to try
And there isn’t much to tell
And what is ‘living well’, I ask
To a mind that wants to achieve it all
The big things seem to be done by others
And everything I do seems small
It smiles back at me saying
You have learnt not my friend
The little things make the big ones
The insignificant sets the trend
I look into my eyes
Through a judging mirror
I touch my soul to feel the past
And check if the future will wither
I feel a cool breeze come back
Like the one that led the morning tide
Fear not it said, if you haven’t been great
Just be good to the one beside.
And that’s how greatness will become, it says
When the goodness passes on
The questioning night will answer itself
And a bright new day will dawn.

A real eye opener for folks who are striving aggressively for a great future, not enjoying the little joyful occassions in life.
