Shibumi

August 13, 2008 by Vikram Hazra 3 Comments

Love this word. The Japanese have a very highly evolved aesthetic sense, and over generations have perfected the art of the unsaid, preferring to make their communication subtle, which often seems cryptic or even evasive to the uninitiated :

Many of you have posted excellent explanations of this word (see Comments below the post on Questions); I really have nothing to add to that.

It also happens to be the title of probably my all-time favourite book, by the mysterious and reclusive author known as Trevanian, whose real name was probably Rodney Whitaker. His insights into various cultures, and into human nature itself, are amazing, couched as they are within the apparently standard format of a spy thriller.
