Bombs away!

August 9, 2008 by Vikram Hazra 9 Comments

It was a very very embarassing day for Mumbai’s music fraternity yesterday! We were treated to a display of discipline, focus, vision and musicianship which has rarely, if ever, been seen on stage in this city — the occasion was the Drum Clinic and Concert by Virgil Donati. One of the topmost rock/fusion/progressive drummers on the planet, Donati is from Australia and has played for some pioneering outfits including Planet X and Vital Information. He was joined by the legendary Australian guitarist Brett Garsed, whose work (with tapper TJ Helmerich, among others) propelled him to the top of the fusion heap, where he has reigned for nearly twenty years!

These guys don’t look like rock stars, they don’t throw attitude around, they dress like normal people; and they play — well, Garsed is brilliant, and Donati is simply inhuman. At the end of the show, people almost forgot to clap coz their jaws were on the floor. The amount of dedication and years of unyielding practice that they have put in, showed through in ever note. The icing on the cake was the clinic section where Donati actually explained and demonstrated some of the ideas he has developed over the years. His practice sessions are like a meditation in themselves 🙂

Thanks to my friend Brijesh Bhargava of Bhargava’s music for going to such great lengths to put this together — this is something that Mumbai needs more often, it’s a real treat for any serious student of music, and an inspiration for any human being on how excellence can be achieved through dedication, hard work, perseverance and thoughtful application of evolutionary concepts.

Parth; uploading unauthorised videos is called piracy! I had special permission to take pics yday 🙂
Tinni, i swear yu shd hv seen the faces of all the so-called ‘rockers’ — unki hawa hi nikal gayi thi! In fact the only ones who really appreciated the depth of their sadhana were the classical musicians (Niladri Kumar and Satyajit Talwalkar were sitting nearby)

I’ve been following Donati’s work with Planet X for quite sometime now. I play the keyboards, but appreciate good progressive music. What he has demonstrated in Quantum (the Planet X’s album) and other Planet X albums is just brilliant. It’d take a lot of dedication, effort and practice to get to where he is right now. And yes, totally agree – They were like the normal folks – Humble, and very approachable. We were shooed off by the organizers – Understandable, since the musicians had to eat and get some rest. 🙂

I think performance of a really dedicated and devoted musician always has a mesmerising effect on the audiance. While, so called rock stars seem to fail in this aspect sometimes.
