A song I’ve been singing lately

August 31, 2008 by Vikram Hazra 12 Comments

A great shloka (which is also usually sung in the bhajan tradition) which is a succinct summary of the Dasha-avatara (as described by the saint-poet Jaydev).

Vedaan uddharate,

Jagan-nivahate,

Bhugolam ud-vibhrate

Daityam daarayate

Valim chhalayate,

Kshatra kshayam kurvate,

Poulashyam jayate,

Halam chalayate,

Kaarunyam aatanvate,

Mlechchanu murchhayate,

Dashaakriti krite,

Krishnaaya tubhyam namaha

….and here is Barbara Stoler Miller’s beautiful translation of this shloka:

For upholding the Vedas,

For supporting the earth,

For raising the world,

For tearing the demon asunder,

For cheating Bali,

For destroying the warrior class,

For conquering Ravana,

For wielding the plow,

For spreading compassion,

For routing the barbarians,

Homage to you, Krishna,

In your ten incarnate forms!

    Jai Gurudev Bhaiya,

Heard u sing a couple of shlokas at the starting of satsangs.

Om Namah Pranavarthaya Shudh Gyane Kamurtauye
    Nirmalaye Prshantaye Dakhisna Murthaye

    Ishwaro Gururatmineti Murti Bhed Vibhagini
Vyom vyapt vyapt deha dakshina Murthaye.

I want to know the meaning of them. Please correct the shloka wherever it is wrong.

    With Love and Warm Regards,
    Siddharth

    dear venu
I guess the greatness of the divine lies in simultaneously being a witness to all things good and bad without judgement, while also ensuring that there is an overall evolutionary trajectory to nature and her rhythms. A surgeon’s scalpel cd be viewed as a healing instrument as well as a sharp weapon, I guess it is the greater common good that it results in which vindicates its acts. 🙂
That said, I find that the further I delve into the mysteries of creation, the more wonderstruck and less judgemental do I become; revelling instead as a witness who has an infinitesimal lifespan, and infinite drama to observe therein.
    warm regards
    Vikram

    Hey Tinni
Its cream and light blue; and was sort of inspired by the cream linen pants and pale blue t-shirt I was wearing at the time! heheheh no deeper significance than that!
